In his first campaign speech of the election year, which was held one day before the third anniversary of the January 6th insurrection on the U.S. Capitol, President Biden made clear what is at stake in November:

“Your freedom is on the ballot,” he said.

It most certainly is.

Speaking at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania—where the Continental army trained and restructured under General George Washington during the American Revolution—Biden sounded the alarm about the cataclysmic consequences for the country and American democracy if his former (and likely, future) opponent, Donald Trump, were to return to the White House.

“Today we are here to answer one of the most important questions: Is democracy still America’s sacred cause?”

The president asked, invoking a phrase used by Washington. He continued:

“This is not rhetorical, academic, or hypothetical. Whether democracy’s still America’s ‘sacred cause’ is the most urgent question of our time, and it’s what the 2024 election is all about.”

YES. It IS. And as I tweeted that evening, I have been waiting for THIS President Biden for the past three years (see image below). One to call out Donald Trump as the existential threat to our democracy that he is; and to finally go on the offensive against Republican lies, MAGA extremism, and right-wing propaganda.

Get 50% off forever

Biden’s sharp speech in which he lambasted Trump was a long-awaited switch to the offensive against Trump’s endless attacks on our democratic system, checks and balances, and self-confessed plans for a “dictatorship on day one” if he gets back into power. And now that Trump has won the Iowa Caucus (despite massive Republican underperformance there) and his nomination seems all but certain, we must seize upon every opportunity to call him out for the danger he represents to the nation, the world, and democracy; along with the party that continues to venerate him and enable him to continue to pose the most existential threat to our republic in U.S. history. To watch Biden’s full speech from 1/5, which I highly recommend, see this link.
