The people from Be’eri used to say the reason the Israeli kibbutz was so close to the Gaza Strip was because otherwise, it would be too perfect. “It was a joke, something we used to say because Be’eri is so beautiful. It’s the place where you want your kids to grow up. The sunsets are beautiful, the fields are green, it has everything you’d want from a vacation spot,” Lotan Pinyan told a reporter from CNN on Wednesday. The occasional rockets from Hamas (which were typically intercepted by Israeli armed forces) were the only downside to living in the otherwise idyllic spot, Pinyan and his friends used to say in jest. “It’s not a joke now,” he said.

They murdered more than 120 of its residents, including women and children. They killed soldiers. They violently butchered people in front of their loved ones, and kidnapped others. They set fire to people’s homes, then mercilessly shot and killed them when they tried to escape the flames and smoke. They looted, stole, and destroyed everything they could.
